SMS Model Testing Completed
Sigma Offshore has completed a series of model tests that have validated their computer simulations of the innovative SMS external turret system.
The "Smart Mooring System" allows unlimited weathervaning of an FPSO, EWT or shuttle tanker and can be retrofitted to any existing vessel.
The test programme included both the all weather and QCDC versions of the SMS and was based on the SMS fitted to an Aframax tanker in 255m water depth. The QCDC version used 3 mooring lines and was tested in a 7.0 m significant wave height storm (13 m maximum wave height), while the all weather version used 6 mooring lines and was tested in a 14.6 m significant wave height (27 m maximum wave height).
In addition tests were undertaken of the canister alone in extreme conditions.
The testing was carried out at the Danish Hydraulic Institute at Hørsholm.
