Sigma expert highlights the future for ageing platforms

A leading North Sea engineering expert will describe the work undertaken by 300 colleagues from around the world in a talk at a key oil and gas industry event in Norway.

David Galbraith, Engineering Manager of ambitious FPSO moorings provider and engineering consultancy Sigma Offshore, will make his presentation at the Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority's Structural Integrity Seminar as part of the ONS Exhibition and Conference in Stavanger.

Mr Galbraith has more than 30 years' experience in the offshore oil and gas industry and has been involved with international standards for the past 13 years.  The first part of his talk will cover the development of international standards for offshore structures.

Mr Galbraith was project leader for ISO 19902 which focussed on the design, operation and maintenance requirements for fixed steel jacket platforms and this will form the second part of his talk. The standard was published at the end of last year.

The requirements and recommendations for ageing platforms and for life extension are of particular relevance in the North Sea and elsewhere at this time.

A member of ICE (Institute of Civil Engineers), the Energy Institute and chairman of the Aberdeen branch of the Offshore Engineering Society, Mr Galbraith said: "International Standards has become a passion of mine, the fundamental purpose is to document and codify all the hard won experience the industry has gained over the last 40 years.

"The second part of my talk incorporates the contributions of some 300 offshore structure engineers from around the world.  I believe it's important that this state-of-the-art information is passed on for benefit of everyone involved in this sector of the industry."

The talk will take place on Wednesday, August 27, at the Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority's offices which are situated near the ONS venue.
